Troop 381, Zion's Camp, Bear Canyon Lake Arizona, 2006
Will I feel the same tomorrow?
We need help
Can you assist?
Someone asked of me,
Lead a team? --
Yes, in the past
I did succeed,

My first day out
I simply watched
What other leaders did --
Respected men
But I saw gaps
I thought this -
But they did that,

Can my approach be so strange?
Common sense- or not?
A feeling started deep inside
Familiar now to me
Defensiveness –
Discouragement –

But across my face
A wry grin crept
For this is how I work,
When given time solutions find
That’s what I’ve done
That’s what I do
So to test, I said a word
Then sat back, to observe
Affects –

To my cheer I saw a change
A difference I might make
A load of work – that I know --
Will I feel the same - tomorrow?

Amy, Ashley and Denise, Santa Monica California, December 1986
Children playing on the beach
A little cup and a bucket deep -
They play and pour each grain of sand
Then in the shallow surf they ran
And laughing to my arms they came

Had I had the gift I want
A little spoon like a magic wand
I’d open their head and fill it up
And pour each thing
Like sand in cup

I’d pour in what I have gained
Now ocean breeze they’d understand
But that’s not how it is done --
I look around, where have they gone?
Just that fast they all are grown

Now their choices are their own
They will laugh and they will mourn -
Each must walk the path they choose
But what about the map they use?
Will they win or will they lose?

The Map -- I cannot see it well
Is that a circle or line I drew?
Some is filled, but not by me
Some is blank, as it should be
But where will it lead?

I show but will they see
I call but will they hear
Some advice that I hold dear
I hope and pray; I’ll be here
But they must steer

Ah -- how my heart takes flight
When I see them win a fight
When stand tall on the path
When I see the danger passed
When a hand they lend to me
When together we will be

Late summer sun
Pueblo Canyon, Sierra Ancha Wilderness Arizona, 2011
Should be done
But it drags on
Til fall’s ‘bout gone,

When days are short
They speed on,
Fall does come
But it doesn’t last long

When the weather’s nice
The other guy’s plans
Book my time
And the things I want
Never get done

Now the weather gets cold
And the other guy’s gone
I have to make due
Or nothing gets done,

When spring comes around
I take control
Much gets done
It’s not too cold

Then comes the sun
And time slows down
Nothing get done
Til summer’s gone.

A talent of gold,
Arashiyama Japan, Autumn 1979
The popular soul,
Is a tricky gift–a turncoat,

Rare is the one
Grasping morals and crown
Through to the end,

The path of success
Has a drunken affect
And many succumb

When the best resist
All can attest
Many are blessed
