Summer Matsuri, Kishiwada Japan, 1980

I’m inclined -
To sit reclined -
Find a rhyme,
Connect a dot,
Tie a knot.

A game of chance -
Becomes a test.
To Win - Godsend,
To Lose – Portent.
To Draw – Amiss.

Why look? - Nothing’s there -
And glean a sign?
A cat shaped cloud.
Speak aloud! Ah!
Now Gone! - I laugh!

Collecting Dust

Osaka Japan, 1980
Met a man - in Detroit -
Confident and bold!
Father worked for GM
Uncle worked at Ford

Enamored with his Corvette
Ordered - but not built
An engineering marvel!
More like a work of art!

It’ll glide along with upgrades
A beauty – Best in Class
Even proud he did not buy
The carbon fiber dash.

His family got a discount?
Only $60K - no more.
Insurance is a Grand a year -
“This Second Car - is stored.”

Embracing a corporate tune
“The Car Extends the Man!”
It’s who I am!  Ain’t it Grand?
I stood and bid adieu.

Silent on what I believe
About this corporate lie
Jewelry, clothes, cars and stuff
Only dusty – fluff!

Supermodels - ignite fashion
The inverse is not so!
The shiny suit – a thin veiled sham -
It’s no smile or helpful hand.

Material things - a monetary choice.
Time speaks with louder voice.
What we do in helpful ways,
Tell truer stories - end of day.

Tiny scratch on a hood!
Brings ire, grief - it’s understood!
Against the feeling in the heart,
When someone’s burden we make light!

Nishinomiya Japan, 1979
Knives, spoons and forks,
An eclectic mix,
Drawer they sit,
Waiting not,

Favorites have I,
A vintage butter knife,
Broad, straight and light,
Not there tonight.

Water’s Edge

Maui, March 2012
Frothy ocean brine
Waves in a line
Wraps my feet
Now sink deep

The sand beneath
My arch and heel -
There it goes!
‘Tween my toes!

Pip Squeak

Shi Shi Beach Washington, 1998
Mice and doors,
Expect a squeak!
Sand and squash,
Not so much!

Yellow squash,
Against the teeth.
Astorian sand against the feet,
An unexpected peep!
