Genius

Troop 381, Cochrane Arizona, 2008
Ponderosas crowd the oak -
Boys’ play ‘Tween bough and brook -
Needles lay thick about
They come and go throughout.

One by one - each word - I choose -
Delivered in an - apropos mood,
Of how and what in the wood -
Sometimes I think I’m understood.

Cook an egg – Tie a bend,
Show respect, win a friend!
Set a course – make amend,
Right a wrong, gain an end!

Muscles and Mind – Taut and taught!
Baden Powell – Boy led and tired out!
A boy’s plans gone awry -
They learn more if I don’t try.

Run in light - Walk at night -
Christ’s majesty - Heaven’s might!
The moment’s right, time takes flight –
This genius, My Plight!

Fire

Troop 509, Shi Shi Beach camp, Washington, Summer 1998

Greedy flames
Lightly lick –
With yellow tongues
Lick again -
Warming wood
Now crack
Now glow
Now char
Now black
At dawn?
Just -
Dust.

Unresolved

Needing a hook -
Nara Japan, 1979
To finish today
Scoured my shop
Find it? No way!

In the night as I slept
I dreamt of a dream
A clip from a scene
Of something I made

I remembered the thing
I built in some dream
A goofy contraption!
Two hooks, latch with string?

In the dream as I slept
Glimpsed holding the hooks
Then knowing the ruse
Laughing I woke!

Never before had I -
Dreamt of a dream
Or dreamt of a thing
From an earlier dream

When eyes were shut
My mind was at work
Two hooks on hand!
But now - I’m without -

My conscience mind
Wants to go back -
To examine the thing
But I can’t.

Ages

Nara Japan, 1979
Fifty years
Earth ‘round sun
As if on gears
A clock and time
No one winds,

Each year – distinct
A familiar face
How indistinct
A changing place
Morphs Extinct -

Perspectives shift
Tic Toc Tic –
Things forgot
A photograph
No name on back.

A note or scrap
Soon folded back
Recollection too
A glancing face -
A guise – a lace.
