Widower

Denise and I at Kneaders, December 2015, Gilbert Arizona

I woke before the dawn
And remembered she had gone
Was she at a spa retreat?
Looking for a bite to eat?

Then I thought a moment more –
She was ill, we found no cure.
No, she won’t be coming back
She’s gone, though I search or ask.
She can’t be reached by phone.
She has left me here alone.

Last Scene

Denise teaching Relief Society lesson, December 2015, Gilbert Arizona

When did you see her last?
I was not able to pass –
At the end with the gate –
Yet turning gazed along
The lane we’d come.

I saw her last
Game and laugh,
Walk in the grass,
Dinner with friends,
Drink from a glass,
Stand by herself,
Smile with her eyes –
Yet mine seldom dry.

I saw her last
Visit with friends,
Care from my hands –
Sound and breath.

I was there in the end –
I’ll finish the race,
Try keeping your pace,
Alas – we’ll meet again –
My Love -- prepare a place.

Passing

Her glasses and things, February 2016, Gilbert Arizona

I watched her passing through a veil
Though body racked in cancer’s grip
Her spirit rose o’er death prevail
In peace from life she slips

Denise passed away today at 4:35 PM, at home surrounded by family.  Thus ending her two and a half year battle against breast cancer.  The only effective treatment was surgery.  I am thankful for family, friends, doctors, nurses, medicines and those who developed them, that allowed Denise to live as long as she did in relative comfort.  She is in a better place now.
