Youth

Scouts Swimming in the Pacific near ShiShi Beach Washington State July 1999

Will ever there be
A youth complete
Who walks the path
Upon both feet
Who stumbles not
Nor drops the chalk
Has practiced well
Who knows their part?

No. There never will.
It’s not the plan
From grace to grace
We all must stand

Transition

Denise, Ontario California, Summer 1987

I met a girl
Made her wife
We lived alone
With little strife

She guided me
All her days
When I evade
Her ire raise

Children came
One to four
We grew together
In calm and storm

And all the while
She worked on me
We did not split
She did not flee

Kids now have grown
They live their life
We live alone
With little strife

I’m not the same
You see I’ve changed
Her work’s not done
Though setting sun

You see she’s ill
And soon will pass
She’s still so young
My mentor gone

Oh woe am I
What will become
Of me and mine?

Stoney Ground

Denise in silk kimono, Tokyo Japan 1981

Do you wish to see the sea and do
To search and find new things - me too.
I’ll tell you all is not so good
I’ll say some’s dull, misunderstood
For that is what I feel

The road she traveled was roughly shorn
It taxed her spirit, yet haply borne
She fought and bled, yet all she did
There was no joy, non-comforted
The cancer came - again

Aloud she read what penned with care
To those dear doctors working there
She said, “I’ll let it run its course”,
Continue spreading, for treatment’s worse
She said, “Enough, I’m done”

I heard her words and felt a pang
A strange new feeling sadly sang
An empty hole dark and deep
Like losing a ring you wished to keep
Like waiting for friends who never came
A sad story’s end you cannot change
