Hiatus

Sun and mist, Cape Alava, Washington, June 1999

I cried until
My eyes were dry
There’s nothing left
I slept

I woke, and pain?
Was still asleep –
On midnight leave –
Fatigue displace –
Oh, why the change?

I think – I care
So sure I do
But I can’t feel
No aches pierced through

So where’s it gone?
Am I good or worse?
Am I blind, alone?
Or astride the course?

Has it expired?
Deep in my soul
Or simply tired
And breathing slow?

A scar obscure
A callous thick
I can’t be sure
Still midst of it

Home

Larry and Barbara Standage, mom and dad, 1958, Mesa Arizona

My Dad and Mom,
My kid’s homes,
Much different than our own.

Two come together
In a space with love
Use all their means –
Live as they seem –
And no one knows
The closing scene.

Harvest

Makah Petroglyphs, Yellow Banks, Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, June 199
Scriptures open on my lap
Pondering thoughts –

God’s shoulder tap
In prayer I plead
I wish to see
Why they believe
At church I glean.
Then follow with

Scriptures open on my lap
Pondering thoughts –
