Practice

To know a thing –
Balloon Man and Southbound Rail Runner, Santa Fe New Mexico, October 2016
And yet not know.
It’s in the mind,
But not for show.

To build a fire
In the snow,
Is such a thing
Would you say so?

To find the wood.
To strike a flame.
To build it up.
That it remain!

If all you did
Was read a book –
You’d likely fail.
Would be mistook.

Snowy blanket
Covering ground,
Where to look
That wood be found?

And not just any
To be sure.
Wet wood’s bad
It will not burn.

Although I taught
This to my scouts.
None succeeded
Their first time out.

Fingers stiff and
Patience gone,
Snow cold and wet
The battle won!

Lettered

Prepping for night glow, Albuquerque New Mexico, October 2016

Was it in the eyes?
I saw a change
Or, how she stood
Or things arrange?

I could not tell
What communicates
Yet what she learned
Did elevate

I did perceive
Some subtle sense
A glowing aura
Though no words state

Wounds

Night Glow, Albuquerque New Mexico, October 2016

Like an open wound –
Yet does not bleed –
It can’t be seen –

Then folks come by
And pick and pry
I almost cry

It’s in my heart
Preparing to part

I can’t conceal
Takes time to heal

I walk away
To keep at bay

The Best of Friends

Leaving the Canyon, Grand Canyon, Arizona, September 1992

Two young girls climbed a tree
Then planned their life – eternally
They ran and grew as they played
Along the path one moved away

Now one is sick and near the end
Yesterday, visiting the other came
Too weak to speak, yet smiling knew
The other’s love was true
(Thank you Linda, she loved you)
