An Awakening

Looking South to Mt. St. Helen's, Granite Mt. Washington, January 1999

I read a passage in a book
It was as though I just awoke

My mind began to soar
And other thoughts explore

A dawning sun brightly shown
How is it that I’d never known?

The Grub and the Worm

Ultra light camping - Wood Badge R-C Arizona, August 2016

Said a garden grub big and fat
To the skinny little worm as a matter of fact
I’m flying away! I’m better than you!
When I grow up, I’ll wear six shoes.
My shiny new wings will take me high,
Yes, when I am big, it’s a big goodbye!

The skinny little worm felt really bad
And borrowed down deep, kind of sad
He liked that grub when skinny and lean
Before he spoke and acted mean
The proud fat grub munching, shook a leaf
That’s when chicken found him, juicy like a peach!

Wood Badge Staff, WE6-10-16-4, Camp R-C Arizona, August 2016

An orange ripe
On a lower limb
First fruits
Bushels brim

Then weeks extend
To harvest all
Requires effort
And a ladder tall

Oh the easy pick –
Then hearty work
The easy pace
Won’t win a race

Dark Clouds

Local Talent, Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 2016
A great dark cloud settled over me
It blocked the sun I could hardly see
A gathering storm began to rain
A cold east wind I leaning strain

Yet in my core I understood
That weather changes as it should
That watered earth is lush and green
And time will change the scene

I know the rain too much to fret
And weather will turn colder yet
When driven snow begins to fall
Springtime shortly brings the thaw

Yet now from clouds rain falls.
