Coming of Age Day, Kyoumizu Dera, Kyoto Japan, January 1981

When we were young
We owned some pots
A set of pots and pans

The biggest pot
Well used it got
It most of all the lot

Though aught not
That biggest pot
Its handle lost

Now wonder when
And why and how
I did not mend?

The handle gone
When can’t recall
What happened then

That piece and screw
I surely knew
Though didn’t do

But in the end
No fix begin
I did not mend

Now I thought –
What other things
Were like forgot

Get Up!

Change, change
Coming of Age Day, Kyoto Japan, January 1981
Young man’s game

Dodge and weave
Here then leave

Accustomed paths
Now shattered glass

Can’t look back
A pointless task

Just rebuild
Each harder still

Nicoll Family Roundup, Concho Arizona, July 2003

Conscience ebbs
Reminisces flow
Tides and sands
Shifts and slows

Patterns change
Linkage lost
Interests strain
Relations frost

Through it all
Are anchors set
About which most
Has no affect

Horn Toad

Horny Toad, Horton Springs Trail, Arizona June 2009

Mister Horny Toad
You gave a fright
I approached your perch
Near coming night

Shifting rock
Your roundish shape
Your scaly back
Your spiky nape

Now belly cool
Against my palm
I stroked your back
You hunkered down

Closed your eyes
You like the heat
Seemed just as happy
Back on your feet.
