Girl's Camp

Fairview Girls at Camp, Lo Lo Mai, Arizona, June 2016

I went to camp the other day
Twenty girls came to play

Twenty smiles upon their face
Twenty voices in sequence raced
Twenty sang a single song
Twenty followed the creek along
Twenty danced upon the ground
Twenty swam a pool around
Twenty each a craft they made
Twenty heads on pillows laid
Twenty lives so different led
Twenty share a single thread

To speak a thought is to take a breath,
Seeking fun is as food to them
They live and love, and what they know
They bear it all an open soul
What do they fear?
There’s plenty there
Yet courage tried
And charms refined
Their steady pace
Gives them the race

Great and Small

Sakura, Shinjuku Japan April 2017

What truth do we cling to?
What is the why that we do?
At the end what our lives amount to?
Will great or the small pay the due?

Great deeds are the adventure
Small deeds some courage and brawn
Great are the fewer in number
Small fill our time all day long

Both tell the tale we are weaving
Never shun nor the other undone
Live both the mundane and exciting
And abundance you’ll find you have won

Best Friends

Takoyaki Yasan, Narita Japan March 2017

None and I could be alone –
The things and all I’ve been –
We all help me get along
I’ve been there through thick and thin

Fetch me a salad of spinach and greens
Said the cook to the gardener glean
The landscaper mows in the morning
The woodworker builds at noon
Dinner done, maid make the kitchen clean
The evening musician will strum and sing

The reader thinks of writing
The writer loves a to read
The planner makes notes and lines
The poet jots the words that rhyme

The hiker sets out a moderate pace,
The cyclist prefers the wind in his face
The treadmill and biker set the weights
In a room kept cool through an AC grate

The employee spends his time on the phone
The commuter unwinds as tunes take him home
The traveler plans far in advance
An adventure of epic resort
The grandfather hugs after cookies or cheese
Then off to the park or the pool - evening breeze

Without all this help t’would be lonely indeed
Now I’m tired and worn and the dreamer will keep
All together ‘til later I must now fall asleep
